Past

For three decades before the tsunami, Acehnese freedom fighters
(GAM) had been in armed conflict with the Indonesian government.
Over 150,000 lives were lost and several cease fires were signed
and broken. The government and GAM fighters could not have been
more diametrically opposed in their visions for Aceh.

In post-tsunami Aceh with 130,000 killed and half a million homeless
survivors, the unprecedented suffering relegated the political struggles
off the list of concerns. Thus began the first serious attempts at
establishing a permanent peace. On August 15, 2005 a historic peace
treaty was signed in Helsinki. GAM fighters were given the chance to
reintegrate into society and join the political process.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those
who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."

Romans 8:28
